Frontier Photography – Jen Davis

Posted on: May 13, 2011

4 A.M., 2003

These self-portraits deal with my insecurities about my body image and the direct correlation between self-perception and the way one is perceived by others in a society that dictates beauty based on physical appearance.

What Was Left, 2007

I transform the act of taking a self-portrait into a performance for the camera.  Many of my pictures take place in my home, revealing aspects of my identity that are private and personal.  My work is partially based on personal experiences that I have re-constructed into a photograph, and partially based on fantasies of what I imagine a physical relationship to be regarding intimacy, love and desire.

This was wonderful. Thank you, FP, for publishing these photographs, and thank you, deeply, to Jen Davis for the willingness to examine not just the body and “beauty” but also your own vulnerabilities.
